HERSHEY KISS HAT
For instructions on making other sizes, see below the pattern instructions.
Materials:
Size H crochet hook
Red Heart Soft in the color Chocolate
Black ball point pen or fabric paint
Black ball point pen or fabric paint
7/8" X 7" Cloth Ribbon
small safety pin
Fray check
**Note before you begin: Against the usual rule of crochet, the ch 3's at the beginning of each row DO NOT count as a double crochet throughout the stitch counting process, and ALL rows are joined to to the top of the first double crochet in each row, not the beginning chain 3.
Begin:
1) In magic circle, work 8 dc. Do not close up completely, allowing for room to fit ribbon in when finished. Join w sl st.
2) Ch 3, dc in same sp, *2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc; repeat from * around. (12)
3) Ch 3, dc in same sp & ea dc around. (12)
4) Ch 3, dc in same sp, * 2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in next; repeat around. (18)
5) Ch 3, dc in same sp & ea dc around. (18)
6) Ch3 , dc in same sp, * 2 dc in dc, dc in dc, * repeat from * around. (27)
7) Ch 3, dc in same sp & ea dc around. (27)
8) Ch 3, dc in same sp, *2 dc in dc, dc in next; repeat from * around. Join. (40)
9) Ch 3, dc in same sp & next 8 dc, 2 dc in next, (dc in 9 dc, 2 dc in next) 3x. Join. (44)
10-13) Ch 3, dc in same sp & ea dc around. Join. (44)
14-15) Ch1, sc in same sp & ea sp around. Join. (44)
Finish off, weaving in ends & securing tail from magic circle. Be sure to leave a small opening large enough for inserting ribbon.
Clip one end of the ribbon as shown in picture, print near the end of ribbon with pen the word "Kisses", & apply fray check to each end of ribbon. Allow to dry. If you are making the hat for a photo prop, insert the ribbon into the top of the hat, and pin to top of inside of hat, being sure to pin AROUND an inside stitch, not through, to ensure the integrity of the yarn. Take ribbon and pin off hat before washing. To secure the ribbon permanently to the hat, simply sew it in place rather than using the pin. I am unsure, however, how well the ribbon and ink will endure washings.
For larger size hats experiment using thicker yarns such as Lion Brand, Impeccable, etc. Use larger size hooks such as I and J. For an even larger sized hat, try crocheting two strands of yarn together or use chunky yarn (size 5) and a size K, L, or N hook.
For preemie hats use an f or g hook and/or size 3 baby sport yarn.
For preemie hats use an f or g hook and/or size 3 baby sport yarn.
***If you do experiment and make other size hats as suggested, PLEASE feel free to comment below and share with us your results of the finished sized hat you made according to the circumference, as well as what yarn and hook you used to obtain it! THANK YOU!

ReplyDeleteYou're welcome! Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteWhat is a magic circle?
ReplyDeleteDo you offer this in a video? It's so hard for me to follow a written pattern. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHere is a tutorial to make a magic circle. Hope it helps!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLuSVyKvoUg&feature=plcp&context=C37966aeUDOEgsToPDskLpsAi2xiiMjEScVZsucPkO
ReplyDeleteAnd no, I don't have a video tutorial to make the hat, but perhaps I will-its a good idea.
ReplyDeleteI found your pattern on allfreecrochet.com and I made a copy of it. I noticed you have listed a black ball point pen for writing on the ribbon. May I suggest a tube of black fabric paint instead. After it dries it doesn't wash out as quick as the ink does. I love the pattern and as soon as I get the two done that have already been asked for I'll post them to you.
ReplyDeleteThank you Marsha, that is an excellent idea!!!!!!! I don't have fabric paint, and have rarely ever used it, so I didn't think of that one!
ReplyDeleteMy niece is having twins in September. I'm thinking I'll make 2- Hugs&Kisses!!!
ReplyDeleteHi..I am testing out your pattern and at the beginning of each row I am chaining 3 like the pattern says and connecting it to the first double crochet. It is leaving a large gap each time. Is it supposed to be this way? If not could you tell me what it is I need to do? Thanks : )

DeleteI'm not sure you are doing it right...at the beginning of each row, you chain three, and then double crochet in the same space. (The base stitch that you build the chain-3 off of). I'm not quite sure what you mean by "connecting it to the first double crochet."
ReplyDeleteis it ok to sell items made with this pattern? thanks!
ReplyDeleteThis was the easiest pattern for me to understand:) thank you so much!
ReplyDeleteI am trying this in an adult size ..... Following larger hook and bulkier yarn..... Any suggestions on extra stitches, where, how many??? Help please. Thanks
ReplyDeleteI would recommend trying this with a size K hook, and either chunky yarn or two strands of a medium weight yarn. I can almost bet that it will be perfect! Just follow the pattern as written. Please share with us how it works.
ReplyDeleteIs it ok to sell the finished product?
ReplyDeleteVickie,
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for your blog. It is wonderful to read your interest, greatest of all is God! Family and yes crocheting, all on the top of my list as well. I would add horses :)
Thank you for the pattern, and thank you for speaking up in the name of Our Lord!
Karen
Yes, it is ok to sell the finished product. I would appreciate if you mention credit to Creative Creations by Vicki, however. Thanks. :)
ReplyDelete@Karen: Thank you for your kind words, encouragement, and for sharing your heart as well. For all the Lord has done, how could I nothing but speak up for Him, right? I love horses, too, but sadly have never had the opportunity to feed that love for horses that I always had....and now I am allergic to them. :( God bless. :)
ReplyDeleteI want to make this hat in a 6-12 mo. size but don't see where you give the stitch count for it. You said this is a newborn size, usually there are additional sizes in parenthesis. Can you please tell me how to adjust this to be the 6-12 mo. size.
ReplyDeleteI did just make the pattern for a newborn size. However, I have found that the finished size of an item made from patterns such as this can easily be altered by doing as I stated in the directions. And that is, using larger or smaller hooks and yarns. I have found typically for hats that one size hook and/or yarn as needed will result in one size larger of a hat size. Use a size "I" hook instead of an "H", and that should be sufficient for you. If yous titch somewhat tightly, even with a larger hook size, try using a bit of a thicker yarn such as Red Heart Love or Lion Brand's Vannas Choice. You will want the finished piece to measure 16"-17.5" in circumference for 6-12 month size.
ReplyDeleteGood luck, and please contact me again if you have any further questions!
Hi there... just came across your blog while looking for some special projects for my newest niece. I am a homeschool mother of 6 and am also addicted to crochetting.... i just love that you can take yarn and make something cute yet constructive w/it. Not to mention that your children have the unique satisfaction that "my momma made me my hat"! I love your pattern and just wanted to let u know that i appreciate your work!! thank you - Melanie
ReplyDeleteHi Melanie! Thanks for the kind words and the encouragement. I love finding other homeschooling Moms with the common love for kids, family, and crochet. :)
ReplyDeleteI've made the Hershey Kiss Hat as small as I can using your instructions for preemies but it's not small enough. I make preemie hats for the local hospital and the ones they need are 8" head circumference. Is there a way I can reduce the pattern and still keep the Hershey Kiss look? I've tried using fine brown baby yarn and reducing the number of stitches, but to no avail. Can you please help me with this? I'd love to be able to give these hats to the hospital. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteCarollyn, have you tried going down a few hook sizes? That's usually how I adjust sizes of hats :)
ReplyDeleteYes, I went down to an E hook size but the hat was still too large.
ReplyDeleteCarollyn, if you have already tried other things,I would suggest you begin making the hat again following the instructions, using the baby sport weight yarn and the E hook, and after each row, measure the circumference. Once it gets to almost 8" or just at 8", stop increasing the stitch count on the next rows. Continue working till the hat is approximately the length you would want it, then add one or two rows of the sc to finish the look.
ReplyDeleteLet me know if this is enough info for you or if you will need further help. :)
Thank you. I will let you know if it works out or not.
ReplyDeleteI tried your suggestion and it worked! It still looks like a hershey kiss and it's small enough to fit the preemie babies heads. Thank you very much for your help.
ReplyDeleteSo glad to hear it worked! The premies must look adorable with their little Kiss hats on. <3 What a blessing you make those, and thank you for using my pattern for them. If you have any photos, please feel free to share them.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely Love this! I have a set of twins coming soon, so I will be making 2 of these!
ReplyDeleteHello, thanks for the pattern, I do it! the instructions were very easy. I'm glad to find your page.
ReplyDeleteWhere can I send my picture of my work?
Greetings from Ecuador.
love this hat so cute and so easy to make
ReplyDeletelove this pattern! with my tribe there is no lack of new babies!lol I understand pattern fine but do u join the fist few rows it does not say join until around row 8 it just threw me off please let me know thank u so much!
ReplyDeleteI got this pattern because my daughter wanted make my granddaughter 6 months picture with it and it was also in February. The pattern was so easy it didn't take long at all to do it. The picture turned out so cute. She put her in a wooden crate with a red blanket inside the crate with my granddaughter in the crate with only the hershey kiss hat and a diaper. Turned out so cute! Thank you for sharing the pattern.
ReplyDeleteI used Hobby Lobby's I Love This Yarn! with an I hook and ended up being 15" in diameter before stretch, perfect fit for a 3-6 mo. old.
ReplyDeleteI used Red Heart Super Saver coffee with an H hook for the hat. I finished the hat (rows 14 & 15) with an E hook but still ended up with 15 1/2" hat circumference. Instead of using the ribbon, however, I used a D hook and some leftover white baby yarn. I chained 31, then made a crochet ribbon of 5 rows and stitched "KISSES" with the Red Heart yarn. I haven't found a way to send you a photo yet, but I will if you're interested.
ReplyDeleteThis hat is precious I am goin
ReplyDeleteg to try making one. I do a lot of crocheting, but not tried anything like this so I am excited about trying this it is absolutely darling
I don't understand the head circumference is that how many rows you use?
